Cross central Athens through its everyday neighbourhoods, starting in Koukaki with its café-lined pedestrian streets and Friday vegetable market, then through Plaka to the flea-market streets of Monastiraki. Continue to Psyri, known for its live-music tavernas and Heroes Square, and Metaxourgeio, the old 'silk mill' district reborn with galleries and cafés, before ending in Gazi around the former gasworks that began operating in 1857.
