In the Footsteps of Socrates: Agora to Philopappos Hill

6 stops · ~1 hr · 3.3 km

Ancient History

Begin in the Ancient Agora, the civic square where Socrates is remembered for challenging people in its streets and colonnades, and look in on Theophil Hansen's National Observatory of Athens, completed in 1846. Climb the Areopagus, the Hill of Ares tied to one of ancient Athens' most important councils, and pass the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on the Acropolis slope. End on Philopappos Hill opposite the Acropolis, at the rock-cut rooms long believed to be the Prison of Socrates.
