Gazi is the Athens neighborhood built around the former gasworks, now home to Technopolis, an industrial museum and exhibition venue. The gasworks began operating in 1857, and its site now covers about 30,000 m2 as a multipurpose cultural center. In 1986, the culture ministry granted the factory protected-building status; the following year, Athens made it a key part of the city’s cultural identity.
Gazi’s story also includes a striking social shift: Muslim families arrived in 1967 amid hard economic conditions in northern Greece, with many working at the gasworks. Since the start of the 21st century, nightlife, restaurants, cafés, and gay-friendly venues have helped shape its entertainment character. Technopolis remains the concrete anchor of that transformation.
