Monastiraki is a flea-market neighbourhood in Athens’ old town, with shopping as its defining draw. Clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and specialty stores make the area a destination for bargain shopping. Its name reaches back through Monastiraki Square to the Church of the Pantanassa, which stands within the square.

Pandrossou Street and Adrianou Street are the area’s main streets, threading through this busy shopping quarter. The square also contains Monastiraki Metro Station, served by Line 1 and Line 3 of the Athens Metro. That brings together browsing and transport in a compact urban setting: small shops fill the neighbourhood, while the station connects it to Athens’ wider metro network. Monastiraki is especially known as a tourist destination in Athens and Attica, where the pleasure lies in searching through varied shops for a bargain.
