Varvakios Central Market, Athens

Varvakios Central Market is a municipal food market housed beneath a glass-and-metal roof. Its rectangular structure was designed by architect Ioannis Koumelis, giving the building a clear, practical presence along Athinas Street. Construction began in 1878 and finished in 1886 after a fire on 8 and 9 August 1884.

Since then, the market has operated continuously. Inside, merchants offer meat, poultry, seafood, farm produce, and other foods under the same roof. The dedicated fish section brings together about 100 fish sellers; about 400 employees work there, serving roughly 3,000 to 5,000 customers each day.

As you walk beside the market, the roof itself is the defining visible detail: glass and metal turn the trading hall into a single shared space. This is a working market with a history reaching back to the nineteenth century.
