Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens
The Museum of Cycladic Art is an Athens museum devoted to ancient works from the Cyclades and other Greek antiquities. Its permanent collection contains over 3,000 objects, giving you an unusually broad encounter with the art of the Aegean islands. The story begins with Nikolaos and Dolly Goulandris, who started collecting Greek antiquities in the early 1960s, with particular interest in prehistoric Cycladic art.
The museum opened in 1986 to house their collection. Its purpose-built Athens home, completed in 1985, was designed by Greek architect Ioannis Vikelas. The institution later gained the Stathatos Mansion, a neo-classical building acquired in 1991. Temporary exhibitions occupy that mansion, bringing modern and contemporary artists into dialogue with the ancient collection.
