Trindade, Porto
Trindade is Porto Metro’s central interchange, the sole station shared by every line. Beneath its long shelter, you are at a transport crossroads built where Porto-Trindade railway station once stood, near City Hall. That earlier terminus opened in 1938, serving narrow-gauge routes that linked Porto with northern towns; it closed in 2001.
Its replacement, designed by Portuguese Pritzker laureate Eduardo Souto de Moura, opened in 2002. The station keeps the journey visible: ABCEF platforms sit at ground level under the roof, while Line D runs below the concourse. The metro inherited much of the former railway alignment, including an old approach tunnel now used by trains travelling toward Lapa. Beyond the entrance, the paved plaza leads to a grass-covered station roof: public infrastructure made into urban open space.
