Ribeira, Porto
Ribeira unfolds as Porto’s riverfront quarter beside the Douro, within the city’s UNESCO World Heritage historic core. As you walk along the quay, the compact facades and terraces belong to an area long shaped by river traffic and trade. The city first grew on Pena Ventosa’s hill, yet a settlement soon formed by the meeting of the small Rio da Vila and the Douro.
Roman-era harbour works stood near the site later occupied by Casa do Infante, and surviving mosaics date from the fourth century. Look for Praça da Ribeira, also known locally as Praça do Cubo, and Rua da Fonte Taurina, among the city’s oldest streets. This district has protected status as a Property of Public Interest, while its quayside now gathers visitors, bars, and restaurants.
