Teatro Municipal do Campo Alegre, Porto

Four performance and screening spaces sit inside this one cultural hub: an auditorium, café-theatre, Cine-Estúdio and Sala-Estúdio. Completed in 2000, the building is the work of architect Rogério Cavaca. It belongs to Porto City Council and is one of the two homes of the city’s Municipal Theatre, alongside Teatro Rivoli.

This is the more experimental side of that partnership. Three equipped apartments allow artists to live here during creative residencies, while Teatro em Campo Aberto brings visiting artists and local companies in for both shorter and longer projects, presented publicly on a regular basis. From 2000 until 2013, Seiva Trupe was the resident theatre company.

The programme that began in 2001 built a following through events including Quintas de Leitura, a poetry series, and educational work. There is also a notably different cinema offer here: the Cine-Estúdio provides Porto’s only programme outside the commercial cinema circuit. Contemporary dance is active here every day through Lugar Instável, and its premieres reach the theatre’s stages. So this is not simply a place to come for a finished show; it is a working base where performances, films and new artistic ideas are made and shared.
