Ruszwurm Cukrászda, Budapest

Ruszwurm Cukrászda is a long-established pastry shop in Budapest’s Castle District, beside Matthias Church. Its story began in 1827, when pastry chef Ferenc Schwabl opened the business here. The room’s polished cherrywood fittings, decorated with mahogany inlay, were made for an early owner by a carpenter named Krautsiedler.

Their Biedermeier character survived the sieges of Buda in 1849 and in 1944–45, so the interior connects today’s cakes with a remarkably durable piece of local history. The shop took its familiar name from Vilmos Ruszwurm, who received his trade licence in 1884 and ran the business until 1922. A further chapter came after nationalisation: the shop closed, was restored during 1959 and 1960, and reopened on 20 August 1960.
