Patisserie Holtkamp, Amsterdam

Patisserie Holtkamp is the bakery in this narrow shopfront, with a history reaching back to 1886. George van Nie opened the business here that year, and in 1928 his son commissioned a complete refit by Piet Kramer. The preserved interior features oak and rosewood display cases, coromandel inlay, pale blue-and-ochre tiling, and leaded glass doors.

A hand-operated lift still links the shop with the cellar bakery, where goods once travelled upward. Cees and Petra Holtkamp took over in 1969, giving the bakery its present name; their family continues to run it. The shop is especially known for its veal croquettes, sold since 1969, and shrimp croquettes, added in the late 1980s after a city café requested them. The shopfront is a municipal monument, preserving a working bakery inside a remarkably intact historic interior.
