Naschmarkt, Vienna

Naschmarkt is Vienna’s popular market for fresh produce, food and eating places, spread along the Wienzeile above the covered Wien River. Its area is 2.315 hectares, making it the city’s largest market within Vienna’s built-up area, and the stalls extend for about 1.5 kilometres. The market’s story reaches back to 1780, when farmers sold mainly dairy goods here beyond the old city walls.

From 1793, fruit and vegetables arriving by cart for Vienna had to be traded at this market. Its earlier official name was Kärntnertormarkt, while people also used Aschenmarkt; the present name is documented from about 1820 and may refer either to ash-wood milk containers or to sweet imported goods. The market moved onto the covered river channel from 1902, with more than 120 permanent masonry stalls built in a unified design from 1910.

Today you can encounter produce, bread, cheese, fish, meat and international ingredients, alongside restaurants serving food such as sushi, kebab and Viennese specialities. On Saturdays, the market area also includes a flea market, a tradition continuing since 1977.
