Museu do Vinho do Porto, Porto
What sits behind this address is not simply a display about drinking Port: it is a museum about the city’s long effort to regulate the wine that carried Porto’s name around the world. Museu do Vinho do Porto belongs to the city museum network, and its present version opened here on the fifth of March 2019, in a restored building on Rua da Reboleira. The museum first opened in 2004 beside the Douro, inside the Cais Novo warehouse, a place that had served both the wine trade and the New Customs House.
Moving into this much narrower, six-storey building changed the story it could tell. Its permanent exhibition follows the municipal control of food supplies, with wine as a particularly revealing case: officials set rules for quantities, quality, prices, containers, sales and transport. Inside, boat drawings and models trace wine’s journey along the Douro.
Measuring and inspection tools, including examples dating to the reign of João the Fifth, explain how merchants and authorities checked that goods met accepted standards. The collection also brings together documents, paintings, sculpture and furniture owned by Porto’s municipality. The museum has been closed for refurbishment since January 2024.
