Mercado do Bom Sucesso, Porto
Mercado do Bom Sucesso is a Porto building that began as a fresh-food market and now serves as a commercial gallery with places to eat, workplaces, and a hotel. It opened in nineteen fifty-two. ARS Arquitectos created its design.
The broad glazed vault and reinforced-concrete structure gave the market a distinctly modern character, filling the interior with daylight. Its plan spreads across three levels to accommodate the slope of the ground, with separate shops around the perimeter. The fish market was placed on a lower level to improve ventilation.
It received Monument of Public Interest status in twenty eleven, then closed for renovation that same year. The renewed market opened in twenty thirteen, preserving much of its earlier gallery while giving the building a new urban role.
