Kádár Étkezde, Budapest
Kádár Étkezde is a small lunch canteen on Klauzál tér, opened by Béla Kádár in 1957. Its speciality is sólet, a slow-cooked bean dish connected with Jewish Sabbath cooking, and its compact dining room became known for Hungarian home-style meals served quickly. The tables carry checked cloths, and people who did not know each other could share them.
The photographs covering the walls preserve signed memories of actors, athletes and film stars who ate here, including Marcello Mastroianni and Sylvester Stallone. For most of the canteen’s history, Sándor Orbán ran it after taking over in 1987, keeping almost the same staff for thirty-three years. His distinctive till-side custom was simple: diners said what they had eaten, and he trusted their account before taking payment. After closing during the pandemic in 2020, Kádár reopened in September 2025 with the old room and most of its menu.
