Conjunto arbóreo em Jardim de S. Lázaro, Porto
Jardim de São Lázaro unfolds as a leafy enclosed garden, with mature trees making a calm canopy above the paths. “It has been Porto’s oldest municipal garden since 1834.” Notice the iron railing around its edge, where a fountain is built into the enclosure; it came from the former convent of São Domingos.
The garden’s romantic design favours shade, foliage, and an unhurried atmosphere, while a bandstand and sculptural groups give it a civic character. Nearby art students helped make sculpture a natural presence here. “Its official name is Jardim Marques de Oliveira.” Along the garden’s edge, the Public Municipal Library and the Baroque frontage of the former São Lázaro convent place this small retreat within a densely historic part of Porto.
