Jardim da Pena, Porto

Jardim da Pena is Porto’s newest garden. It is a small, simple garden made by rehabilitating a neglected area marked by illegal construction. That origin is the surprising part: the garden is not an old survivor, but a recent remaking of land that had fallen into poor condition.

You are in Massarelos, within Porto, at a garden included on one of the city’s Caminhos do Romântico itineraries. It sits beside the Faculty of Arts in the Campo Alegre area. Its compact scale puts the emphasis on its panorama.

Across the open side of the garden, the land unfolds in slopes above the Douro, and Jardim da Pena gives you a wide view over those river-facing hillsides. This is a plain-spoken piece of Porto: a place where renewal and landscape meet. Rather than a grand historic garden, it offers a newer green space and a clear connection with the contours of the Douro valley.
