Jardim da Pena, Porto

A small garden can mark a major change in a city. Jardim da Pena is Porto’s newest garden, created by renewing a site that had been degraded by unauthorized construction. What you have here is deliberately modest: a compact, uncomplicated green space, rather than a grand formal park.

From a safe place on the path, take in the open prospect across the slopes that descend toward the Douro. That view gives this little garden an outsized sense of space: the ground falls away beyond the city, and the river landscape becomes part of the experience. You are in Massarelos, beside the Faculty of Letters in the Campo Alegre area.

Jardim da Pena also belongs to one of Porto’s Caminhos do Romântico routes, a set of walks that links places with the city’s Romantic-era landscape and atmosphere. Here, though, the most striking story is recent: a neglected, illegally built-up patch was reclaimed as a public garden, with a panorama over the Douro’s hillside setting as its reward.
