Igreja da Santíssima Trindade, Porto

Before you is Igreja da Santíssima Trindade, a Porto church on Praça da Trindade behind City Hall. Its construction occupied the whole nineteenth century, following plans by Carlos Amarante, whose tomb is within the church. Worship began here on the fifth of June, eighteen forty-one.

The building carries Monument of Public Interest status. Inside, the chancel holds José de Brito’s large painting of Christ’s Baptism. Local tradition also places an extraordinary episode here: the visionary and healer Guilhermina experienced an apparition of the Trinity and heard angels singing Tantum Ergo Sacramentum.

She also had Marian visions at Vergada, in Argoncilhe. Notice the broad façade, whose restrained presence suits this church’s setting near the municipal buildings.
