Coliseu do Porto, Porto

A fire once tore through this building’s stage, main hall and dressing rooms—yet the Coliseu reopened on the seventeenth of December 1996. That recovery mattered because this is one of Porto’s major stages for music and cultural life, with room for four thousand people in a standing crowd. The façade makes theatre out of architecture: its asymmetrical composition brings together a tower and the canopy over the entrance.

Inside, the auditorium is laid out in a horseshoe, a shape that turns the audience itself into part of the spectacle. The building first opened on the nineteenth of December 1941, after a project that passed through several architects. Cassiano Branco took charge in 1939, reworking the already-built structural shell and reorganising the building’s vertical connections and entrance sequence.

Its Art Deco character is no accident: the Coliseu is a key Porto example of Streamline Moderne and Art Deco. It has also survived an extraordinary civic rescue. When a sale threatened its future as a cultural venue in 1995, artists, institutions and Porto residents mobilised against it. Today, the Coliseu do Porto is protected as a Monument of Public Interest.
