Centro Histórico do Porto, Porto
Porto’s historic centre unfolds here as an urban district rather than a single monument. This is the oldest part of both Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, shaped by the city’s medieval beginnings. Follow the tight lanes and the changing ground between façades: the streets preserve an unusually unified character despite generations of alteration.
The UNESCO World Heritage inscription dates from nineteen ninety-six. Its protected core follows the line enclosed by the fourteenth-century Fernandine Wall, with adjoining places of comparable character, and covers about forty-nine hectares. Sé, São Nicolau, Vitória and Miragaia all belong to this historic fabric. This is a living neighbourhood as well as a heritage site, where the river, slopes, houses and monuments make the city feel layered rather than frozen in time.
