Casa de Serralves, Porto
Casa de Serralves is the villa set within Porto’s Serralves Park. “It stands as Portugal’s unique Art Deco house,” a manner of sleek geometry and decorative richness. Let the crisp planes and carefully composed openings register before the story behind them: Carlos Alberto Cabral, Count of Vizela and a textile industrialist, commissioned the house after inheriting the estate from his father in 1923.
French architect Charles Siclis created the design, while José Marques da Silva oversaw its realization and repeatedly reshaped both house and grounds as work developed. Jacques Gréber designed the gardens, and the whole undertaking reached completion in 1940. Cabral made Serralves his home in 1944, yet sold it roughly a decade later. The estate eventually became publicly accessible and now belongs to the Serralves Foundation, alongside its contemporary-art museum and park.
