Borough Market, London
Borough Market is a working food market hall, serving both wholesale trade and the general public. Its present buildings date from the 1850s, while a market has occupied this site since at least the 12th century. Today, the stalls concentrate on speciality foods, including cheese, meat, baked bread, pastry, fresh produce and other artisanal goods.
The market’s role has shifted over time: during the 20th century it was mainly a wholesale supplier for greengrocers, before trustees revived it as a retail market in the 1990s. Railway viaduct arches pass through the market, and trading continues beneath them. The market and nearby streets have also provided locations for films including Bridget Jones’s Diary, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
