Before a vessel could continue up the Douro or moor, it had to undergo a health inspection at this point. Bandeirinha da Saúde marked the limit for boats coming upriver: they could not proceed or dock until that check was completed. Its purpose was not decorative.

A flag mounted here served as a navigational signal for boats entering Porto’s harbour, turning this modest marker into part of the city’s control of river traffic. The structure dates from sometime between 1597 and 1633, and Mestre Bastião Fernandes is its architect. That makes it a survivor from an era when a river arrival involved not only steering and tides, but official permission to come closer.
