Zum Schwarzen Kameel, Vienna
Zum Schwarzen Kameel is a long-established restaurant, bar, and delicatessen shop in Vienna. Its story reaches back to 1618, when Johann Baptist Cameel bought an existing house and opened a spice shop there; the business took its name from his surname. In 1825, it received recognition as a supplier of spices and provisions to the imperial court.
Among its guests was painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, who created the emblem still associated with the establishment. The house took on its present appearance in 1901, when architects Portois & Fix rebuilt it in Vienna Jugendstil. Today, the Friese family runs the rooms as a restaurant, bar, and delicatessen. Even the name carries a personal trace: it began as a wordplay on Cameel.
