Žičara Srđ, Dubrovnik
Žičara Srđ is Dubrovnik’s cable car, linking the Ploče neighbourhood with Mount Srđ. Built in 1969, it became one of the city’s symbols and the Adriatic’s only cable car at that time. During the Homeland War, the installation was destroyed.
The restored service began operating on 10 July 2010, when Croatia’s prime minister Jadranka Kosor formally opened it. Its two orange cabins carry up to 30 passengers each, and the ride takes about 4 minutes. The line reaches 405 metres above sea level, with a 40-metre steel support between its stations.
At the upper station, an amphitheatre, café, snack bar, shop and terraces look out across Dubrovnik and its old city. The striking detail here is the transformation: a transport link destroyed in wartime now rises again as a vivid part of the city’s experience.
