Sv. Franjo, Dubrovnik
Sv. Franjo is a Franciscan friary and church, with a library and a pharmacy forming part of the same historic complex on Stradun. The carved portal at the church entrance is the remarkable survivor of the earthquake that destroyed the church in 1667.
Its stone Pietà is framed by leafy ornament and accompanied by figures of Saint Jerome and Saint John the Baptist. The portal was made in 1498 by local stonecutters. The pharmacy has operated here since 1317 and is the oldest pharmacy in Europe that still functions.
Within the friary, a cloister built in 1360 has 120 columns, each capital carrying its own geometric, plant, human, or animal design. The library preserves valuable books and manuscripts, while the church also holds the tomb of the poet Ivan Gundulić.
