Willet-Holthuysen, Amsterdam

Willet-Holthuysen is a canal house museum, with historic rooms that let you experience the refined domestic world of Amsterdam’s nineteenth-century elite. Construction for Jacob Hop took place from 1685 through 1687; the current Louis XIV-style façade dates to about 1739. Abraham Willet and Louisa Holthuysen filled the home with art and collected objects; when Louisa died in 1895, she left the house and its contents to Amsterdam on the condition that it become a museum bearing her name.

Inside, the rooms include a kitchen, salons, dining room, bedroom, study and antique room, along with a formal garden laid out in 1972. A side room partly transferred from another canal house contains a ceiling work by Jacob de Wit. The collection also includes two small paintings by William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
