Whitefriar Street Church, Dublin
Whitefriar Street Church is a Roman Catholic church cared for by the Carmelite order, and its most remarkable treasure is the relics of Saint Valentine. Pope Gregory XVI gave those relics to this church during the 19th century, sending them from Rome. The building before you dates from 1825 and was designed by George Papworth, whose work also includes Dublin’s St.
Mary’s Pro-Cathedral; enlargement followed in 1856 and 1868. Among the church’s notable interior features is an oak statue depicting Our Lady of Dublin at life size. The church also holds relics associated with St.
Albert, who died in 1306. On 7 August, a relic connected with him is placed in the water of St. Albert’s Well, which the Carmelites use in a healing devotion. Beneath this building is the site of a Carmelite priory established in 1539.
