This fractured concrete obelisk commemorates victims of Nazism murdered in a nearby prison. Unveiled in 1980, it was created by Wiesław Chmiel as a graduation project. Six plaques honour 314 Polish, German, and Czechoslovak citizens killed for resistance to the fascist dictatorship.

The fractured concrete obelisk ahead is the memorial titled W hołdzie patriotom różnych narodowości straconych w latach 1939-1945, created for people killed by the Nazis in a prison nearby. A painted red drop marks its broken form, making the monument’s image of violence immediate rather than abstract. Behind the obelisk stand five flagpoles.

In front, six metal plaques carry the commemoration further: they honour 314 Poles, Germans, and citizens of Czechoslovakia murdered in that prison for resisting the fascist dictatorship. Their inscriptions also appear in Czech and German, matching the memorial’s insistence that these victims came from different nations. The sculptor Wiesław Chmiel made this work as his graduation project, under the supervision of sculptor Jerzy Boroń.

It was unveiled here in 1980, at the small junction square between Reymonta and Kleczkowska streets. The monument does not turn those deaths into a single anonymous total; its plaques preserve a shared act of resistance across national borders.
