Tóth Árpád sétány, Budapest
Tóth Árpád sétány is a promenade running beside the Buda Castle District’s rampart, forming part of the Bástya promenade. The long route follows the castle wall, while the trees give it a distinct avenue-like character. Its present name honours the nearby poet Tóth Árpád and has been used since 1946.
In the medieval period, this route was a narrow passage serving military purposes. In 1720, a double row of trees was planted along the ruined wall, with a row on each side; this was the earliest planting of its kind in what is now Budapest. A walkable road gradually emerged around 1810.
The route became a formal promenade between 1934 and 1936, then received its present form during restoration from 1966 to 1970. Cherry trees replaced the outer row in 2006 and 2009, and their flowering is now a visitor attraction in its own right.
