Torvehallerne, Copenhagen

Torvehallerne is a food market made up of more than 55 stalls across two halls and an open market square. The covered spaces give you a concentrated taste of Copenhagen’s food culture: one hall brings together cheese sellers, fishmongers and butchers, while the other focuses mainly on bakeries, coffee makers and chocolate shops. In the open area, a produce vendor sets out fruit and vegetables each day, alongside a florist.

Torvehallerne opened in 2011 on the former site of Copenhagen’s vegetable market. The complex was designed by Arkitekturværkstedet ApS, with architect Hans Peter Hagens responsible for the design. Its changing programme also includes market days, a food festival, Bastille Day and seasonal events, so this is both a place to shop and a lively setting for food-related gatherings.
