The Church, Dublin
The Church is a former Church of Ireland building that now operates as a pub and restaurant. Its present structure was designed by Sir William Robinson in 1697, with construction beginning when the foundation stone was laid in 1700. Dublin’s church was notable for introducing galleries into its design, and it was consecrated in 1701.
The building closed for worship in 1986 and was later deconsecrated. This place also carries remarkable personal connections: Arthur Guinness married here in 1761, while Seán O’Casey and Theobald Wolfe Tone were baptised here. The former churchyard is now Wolfe Tone Square, and gravestones remain gathered at the southern end of the park. What you see, then, is a working hospitality venue inside a building that has held parish life, ceremonies and burials across several centuries.
