Tapada das Necessidades, Lisbon
Tapada das Necessidades is a walled green space of about 10 ha beside the Palácio das Necessidades. Its enclosed grounds are largely covered by woodland, giving this park a more secluded character than its urban setting suggests. The site once functioned as a hunting enclosure, intended for keeping game among trees and woodland.
Today, it is a publicly accessible natural park in Lisbon, with entry subject to scheduled access. The grounds extend between the palace and several surrounding streets and institutions, forming a substantial enclosed area within the city. Tapada das Necessidades has held the designation Imóvel de Interesse Público since 1983. What you see here is therefore both a park and a surviving walled estate, where dense planting preserves the older purpose of the enclosure.
