Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Amsterdam

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is a museum building designed by Adriaan Willem Weissman and completed in 1895. It was created to bring several municipal collections together under the Stedelijk Museum. Its exterior combines natural stone and red brick with a gabled end and a small tower, recalling sixteenth-century Dutch Renaissance building.

Inside, the ground floor once contained period rooms, while the upper level accommodated visual art beneath roof windows. In 1938, Sandberg had the exhibition rooms painted white, creating white-cube galleries. The period rooms were removed during the 1970s and placed in storage.

A later wing opened in 2012 after a major renovation, which also moved the main entrance to Museumplein. This museum building is a Rijksmonument.
