Sobór Narodzenia Przenajświętszej Bogurodzicy, Wrocław

Sobór Narodzenia Przenajświętszej Bogurodzicy is Wrocław’s Orthodox cathedral and the principal church of the Wrocław–Szczecin diocese. Built around the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as St Barbara’s Church, it was reconstructed after severe wartime damage and became an Orthodox cathedral in nineteen sixty-three. Its tower carries the rebuilt Kluskowy Clock.

The Sobór Narodzenia Przenajświętszej Bogurodzicy is Wrocław’s Orthodox cathedral, serving both the Wrocław–Szczecin diocese and its parish of the Nativity of the Mother of God. Its present role sits inside a much older shell: this was built around the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as St Barbara’s, a subsidiary and burial church of St Elizabeth’s parish. The Gothic character means a medieval style shaped by pointed forms and soaring vertical emphasis; here the church is a three-aisled brick building.

Its western end has two square-based towers, though only the southern tower reached its intended height. The church became Lutheran in fifteen twenty-six, then served as a garrison church from seventeen forty-one until nineteen twenty. Wartime destruction ruined about seventy percent of it, consuming the roofs, bringing down the vaulting, and erasing its furnishings and medieval wall paintings.

Reconstruction followed between nineteen fifty-nine and nineteen sixty-one, and the Orthodox Church received the building in June nineteen sixty-three. Notice the tower clock: the Kluskowy Clock was rebuilt in twenty fourteen. Local legend gives it its dumpling-related name: households once timed the cooking of Silesian dumplings by its deliberately late striking. Inside, frescoes were created under Jerzy Nowosielski, and the main iconostasis is a carved wooden work made in Thessaloniki in twenty nineteen.
