Rua Nova do Carvalho, Lisbon
Rua Nova do Carvalho is the narrow Lisbon street widely recognised by its vivid pavement, linking Travessa do Corpo Santo with Praça de São Paulo in Cais do Sodré. It is also known locally as Rua Cor-de-Rosa, or Pink Street. Its nightlife grew during the 1920s, when easy access for sailors and port workers helped create an alternative evening scene here.
From 1930 to 1980, venues including Jamaica, Europa, Tamisa, Texas Bar and Shangri-La appeared along the street. A later transformation began in 2011, supported by the Cais do Sodré Association and Lisbon’s municipality. In 2013, architect José Adrião reshaped the roadway and pavements to accommodate terraces and street furniture. The New York Times selected the street among Europe’s 12 best streets in 2015.
