Ratusz Głównego Miasta, Gdańsk
The Ratusz Głównego Miasta before you is Gdańsk’s historic civic hall, placed where Long Lane meets Long Market. Notice the tall tower rising from the dense, patterned façade: it has long been a defining landmark along the Royal Route. The building began far more modestly; surviving fabric dates from the years thirteen twenty-seven to thirteen thirty-six.
As Gdańsk adopted Kulm law, the council and municipal court needed separate chambers, and this house of government grew to contain them. A destructive fire in fifteen fifty-six transformed its story. Dutch designers and master builders rebuilt and enlarged the hall in a Renaissance manner, bringing an Italian-influenced richness to its civic setting.
At the tower’s summit, a gilded figure of King Sigismund the Second Augustus was installed in fifteen sixty-one, on the same occasion that an automatic carillon of fourteen bells performed here for the first time. War again tore away the tower crown and damaged the structure. Reconstruction, begun after the conflict, saved the hall from demolition and was largely finished by nineteen fifty-two. Inside this old seat of power, you now find the Museum of Gdańsk.
