Rákóczi téri Vásárcsarnok, Budapest

Rákóczi téri Vásárcsarnok is a covered food market, designed by István Rozinay and Pál Klunzinger. Its story begins with a proposal made in 1890 by Győző Czigler, followed by construction from 1894 and an opening in 1897. At its busiest, the hall accommodated 375 permanent stalls and 55 temporary ones, with storage below and practical services in the corner pavilions.

Horse-drawn carts could once enter through the principal entrance to unload. The building suffered a devastating fire on the night of 6 May 1988, then returned to service after reconstruction led by György Tokár and György Hidasi, reopening on 25 July 1991. It still operates as a market for cheese, fish, meat, vegetables, fruit and pickles. In 2012, a new Józsefváros quarter took its name from this market hall.
