Pomnik Bohaterów Getta Warszawskiego, Wrocław
Before you is Pomnik Bohaterów Getta Warszawskiego, a plaque memorializing the people who rose in the Warsaw Ghetto. Its restrained form makes remembrance physical and direct: a horizontal granite tablet sits with an upright slab. It was unveiled on the nineteenth of April nineteen sixty-three, marking two decades since the uprising began.
Jewish Social and Cultural Society activists in Wrocław brought the project forward, and an evening procession accompanied by an honour guard preceded the unveiling. Read the dedication on the granite: it salutes Warsaw Ghetto heroes, calls them fighters for shared freedom, and names Wrocław’s community as the donor of this tribute. The words bind a local civic gesture to an event far beyond this square.
During work on the east–west route in the nineteen seventies, carriageways and tram tracks claimed much of the square. The memorial was therefore moved from the square’s central area to this small green space near the Psie Budy tenements. Its compact scale gives the inscription the force of a personal address.
