The square was laid out on the strip once caught between Wrocław’s defensive walls, beside the former Świdnicka Gate. That gate has vanished, but the square preserves the line of movement through what was once the fortified edge of the old city. This small open space therefore connects the theatre district with a medieval boundary that no longer survives.

Beyond it is Wrocław, the historic capital of both Lower Silesia and Silesia, set on the Oder and four of its tributaries.
