Park Świętego Macieja, Wrocław
Plac Świętego Macieja is a square in Wrocław’s Nadodrze neighbourhood, wrapped by a road whose sweep forms a near semicircle between Chrobrego and Trzebnicka streets. The square is named for Saint Matthias the Apostle. Notice the mature trees and the varied rhythm of the surrounding façades: this is a small urban room shaped by many eras.
Before streets and houses arrived, this land was wet, open Matthias Field. In 1253, Duke Henry the Third, Duke Władysław, and their mother Duchess Anna transferred the Ołbin manor here to Saint Matthias Hospital. The square itself was planned in 1873 by O.
Bauer and G. von Drabizius, inspired by English garden squares, with planting and a fountain. Apartment houses followed over the years from 1874 to 1885, bringing classical and Renaissance-revival details, corner turrets, and projecting bays.
Damage during the 1945 siege destroyed part of the neighbourhood. Within the planted square, a magnolia planted in 2013 commemorates singer Anna German, who lived on Trzebnicka Street. The park-like enclosure preserves a fragment of Wrocław’s long shift from marshland to dense city district.
