Plac Grunwaldzki is a former square reshaped into a major Wrocław traffic corridor, centred on Ronald Reagan Roundabout and its integrated public-transport hub. Its open expanse resulted from wartime demolition for an emergency airstrip. Today, university buildings and student residences make the area an important student district.

Plac Grunwaldzki is the broad former square that now functions as one of Wrocław’s main streets and transport interchanges. Its centre is Ronald Reagan Roundabout, an oval junction whose covered middle contains combined tram and bus stops. This space began as Kaiserstraße, a grand avenue planned in the eighteen-eighties to link what are now Grunwaldzki Bridge and Szczytnicki Bridge.

In the final weeks of the 1945 siege, Karl Hanke ordered every building along the avenue demolished for an inner-city military airstrip. The destruction included the Lutheran Church of Martin Luther, whose tower rose more than ninety metres. Only two aircraft departed from that runway: one evacuated wounded people on the tenth of April, and the other carried Hanke away on the sixth of May.

After the war, the emptiness helped turn a street into a place understood as a square. University buildings gradually filled its edges, and this became a centre of Wrocław student life. The central junction was rebuilt between two thousand six and two thousand seven, replacing the long-standing open-air market and completing the transformation back into a major urban route.
