Amsterdam Pipe Museum, Amsterdam

Pijpenkabinet is the former name of the Amsterdam Pipe Museum, a museum devoted to smoking pipes and tobacco-related objects. Its permanent display presents more than 2,000 objects representing pipe-making and smoking traditions used around the world over 25 centuries. Behind the entrance of this canal house, you find a collection that began as a private undertaking in 1969.

It has since grown to more than 30,000 objects, including pre-Columbian pipes from Central America, carved Māori pipes, Turkish water pipes, and Chinese opium pipes. The museum occupies a canal house dating from around 1670, with a preserved stone entrance step and fanlight. Inside, restored plasterwork, a marble passage, and an old timber ceiling connect the tobacco collection with the building’s long domestic history.
