Park imienia Doktora Henryka Jordana is Kraków’s historic park, created in 1889 by physician and physical-education pioneer Henryk Jordan. Europe’s first public playground of its kind, it combined sport, play and social care for children. Its story includes a hornbeam maze, commemorative busts and Jordan’s 1914 monument.

Park imienia Doktora Henryka Jordana is Kraków’s historic city park, named for the physician Henryk Jordan. It opened in 1889 on the Błonia grasslands as Kraków’s first public playground and the first park of this kind in Europe. Jordan created it with Bolesław Malecki, the director of the city parks, and fitted it with exercise equipment inspired by American playgrounds.

This was an unusually ambitious place for children. Its original layout included a swimming pool, twelve sports fields, running tracks, exercise areas, changing rooms and showers; in 1906, indoor facilities followed for wet weather. Children also received free meals here.

Jordan’s programme deliberately made exercise enjoyable: university students supervised games, with archery, javelin throwing, stilt-walking, football, cricket and tennis among the activities. The park’s historical heart was once a circular hornbeam maze with flowers at its centre. In 1914, for the park’s twenty-fifth anniversary, Jan Szczepkowski’s monument to Jordan was unveiled there.

The Second World War devastated the grounds, but twenty-two busts and Jordan’s monument survived because F. Łuczywo saved them. After the war, the park expanded to twenty-one hectares, gaining new sports spaces and a man-made pond for rowing and pedal boats.
