Park Generała Mariana Langiewicza, Wrocław

Park Generała Mariana Langiewicza is a small Gajowice park occupying a block between Gajowicka, Bernarda Pretficza, Wróbla, and Sztabowa streets. Created in nineteen fifty-eight after the clearance of a cemetery founded in eighteen fifteen, it retains much of the former burial ground’s tree cover. A playground and outdoor exercise area serve the neighbourhood.

Park Generała Mariana Langiewicza is a small green space in Gajowice, within the Grabiszyn area of Wrocław. What makes this modest park unusual is that its ground and much of its mature tree cover come from a former cemetery. The burial ground was established here in eighteen fifteen, when this part of the city was known by the German names Gabitzer Begräbnis Platz and Gabitzer Friedhof.

It was cleared in nineteen fifty-eight, and the park dates from that same year. As you move along its paths, the trees give this ordinary neighbourhood park a longer memory than its present layout suggests. The park fills a whole block bounded by Gajowicka Street, Bernarda Pretficza Street, Wróbla Street, and Sztabowa Street.

It also serves the present-day neighbourhood directly: there is a children’s playground and an outdoor exercise area within the grounds. This is a compact place where a nineteenth-century cemetery landscape has been adapted into everyday urban greenery.
