Papa Krasnal, Wrocław

Papa Krasnal is Olaf Brzeski’s bronze memorial to Wrocław’s Orange Alternative movement, unveiled in two thousand and one. The forty-centimetre gnome stands on a finger-tip-shaped semicircular base beside the Świdnicka Street clock, at the departure point for many anti-communist demonstrations and Orange Alternative happenings.

Papa Krasnal is a bronze monument to Wrocław’s Orange Alternative movement: a tiny gnome carrying a large historical charge. Olaf Brzeski created it, and it was unveiled here in two thousand and one. Notice the figure itself: it is only forty centimetres tall, but it stands on an eighty-centimetre, semicircular plinth shaped like the tip of a human finger.

That playful scale suits a memorial to a movement that worked in Wrocław during martial law. This pedestrian stretch of Świdnicka Street is part of the meaning. The monument stands by the clock and beside the underpass beneath Kazimierza Wielkiego Street, at the spot from which most anti-communist demonstrations set out, including Orange Alternative happenings.

Papa Krasnal therefore marks both a particular campaign of civic dissent and the starting line of its public actions. The little gnome has become an especially apt form for that remembrance: compact, humorous and impossible to mistake for a conventional heroic monument. Its finger-shaped base gives the figure a curious stage, as though the city itself were presenting this small character as a reminder that public protest can take inventive forms.
