Pałacyk Marfiewicza, Kraków

Pałacyk Marfiewicza is a historic Kraków residence built for industrialist and banker Antoni Marfiewicz between 1858 and 1862. Designed by Filip Pokutyński as an Italian Renaissance-inspired suburban villa, it stands back from Dunajewskiego Street and retains its distinctive veranda, cast-iron balcony, and ornamental roofline.

Pałacyk Marfiewicza is the historic residence recessed from the building line of Juliana Dunajewskiego Street. That unusually deep setback preserves a clue to its age: it was built between 1858 and 1862, before this street was laid out. Industrialist and banker Antoni Marfiewicz commissioned it, and Kraków architect Filip Pokutyński gave it the character of a late-Romantic suburban villa inspired by Italian Renaissance architecture.

Notice the deliberately uneven massing: one section has a single upper floor, while the taller part rises to two. The taller section carries a veranda and a balcony with a cast-iron railing; the entrance passes through an arcaded recess, approached by steps with another iron railing. Large windows, lightly grooved wall surfaces, a broad dividing cornice, and the ornate parapet at the roofline add formality to this compact house.

The building reached its surviving shape during alterations between 1861 and 1870. It once stood within a formal garden linked in composition to the Planty, but later ownership changes, surrounding development, and the loss of the garden transformed the setting. It has been protected as a historic monument since the thirtieth of August 1984.
