Piwnica Pod Baranami, Kraków

Piwnica pod Baranami is Kraków’s literary cabaret, working in the cellar of Pałac Pod Baranami at Main Market Square, beside the Vis-á-vis café. Piotr Skrzynecki launched it in nineteen fifty-six, and the cabaret has remained active even after his death in nineteen ninety-seven. Notice the sculpted ram heads above the gateway facing the square; Franciszek Maria Lanci made them during eighteen fifty-three and eighteen fifty-four.

This cellar began as a gathering place for students: a creative-youth club whose circle brought together writers, musicians, visual artists, actors, friends, and a devoted public. Under communist rule, it became Poland’s foremost political cabaret for more than thirty years. Its performances offered wit and a liberating distance from the world imposed around their audience.

The palace enclosing it has its own layered past. A Renaissance residence emerged when Justus Ludwig Decjusz joined a pair of Gothic townhouses here. Before that transformation, the premises held a celebrated inn frequented by poets and writers, including Jan Kochanowski, Mikołaj Rej, and Łukasz Górnicki. The cabaret’s deliberately eccentric spirit grew into a local legend, and its approach gave everyday Polish a phrase for this kind of underground performance.
