Old Spitalfields Market, London
Old Spitalfields Market is a covered market, and its long history is still part of what you encounter here. A market has occupied this site since 1638. The surviving Horner Buildings were built between 1885 and 1893 for Robert Horner, following designs by George Campbell Sherrin.
Restoration has renewed the Victorian structures, among them the market hall and its roof, while the surrounding spaces now bring together fashion, arts and crafts, food, independent shops and restaurants. In 1991, the wholesale fruit and vegetable trade moved to New Spitalfields Market in Leyton, leaving this site with its present identity. Public markets now run daily, and the programme includes a vintage market, vinyl fairs and arts and crafts trading. The result is a working market with a substantial historic frame, rather than a preserved shell.
