Nagrobek Władysława III Warneńczyka, Kraków
Before you is the tomb monument of Władysław the Third of Varna, set in Wawel Cathedral between the pillars dividing the main aisle from its northern companion. Yet it holds no king: it is a cenotaph, because his body was never recovered after he died at the Battle of Varna in fourteen forty-four. Antoni Madeyski made it in Rome from red marble and bronze; it arrived here in April nineteen oh six, and its formal unveiling followed that July.
Notice the recumbent young ruler: he wears full armour and clasps the Szczerbiec sword, presented as a knightly defender of Christianity. A young lion rests at his feet, expressing strength and courage. Along the tomb chest, a band of Polish and Hungarian coats of arms marks this royal memorial.
